Does penis enlargement work?
What is penis enlargement?
Penis enlargement refers to the use of the hands or a device to increase the length or girth of the penis.
Although there is evidence to suggest that lengthening can increase size, the results are often minimal. In some cases, they can even be temporary.
Read on to learn more about how penis enlargement works, how to set realistic expectations, and safe enlargement techniques you can try at home.
How does penis enlargement work?
It is important to remember that much of the evidence on penis enlargement is merely anecdotal.
Manual enlargement exercises involve using your hand to massage the tissues along the penis. This is done to stretch the skin and create “micro tears” in the tissue. As they heal, the tissues may appear swollen, resulting in a longer looking penis.
Certain exercises are also said to increase girth. Girth exercises, such as the jelqing method, also focus on tissue massage.
Consistency is key to maintaining any of these desired effects.
While researchers have studied penis extension devices, it’s still unclear how well they might work.
An example would be the penis pump, which is a cylinder-shaped air-filled chamber that attaches to the pelvic area. This is known to produce an immediate erection. Some anecdotes also claim that constant use can eventually increase the length of the penis.
Penile traction devices are also popular. The device pulls on the penis to change its curvature. Traction devices have been used to treat Peyronie’s disease, but more research is needed to determine how effective they really are.
What the research says
Research on penis enlargement techniques is limited. None of the studies that have been done point to any technique as an effective way to permanently enlarge the penis. However, a temporary increase in size may be a possibility.
A 2010 review reported that men who used the Andropenis enlargement device saw an increase in size with prolonged daily use. The participants used the device for six hours a day for four months, and had between 1.8 and 3.1 centimeters (cm) of increase in length.
There is much more research available on traction devices, although not necessarily for increasing penis length:
A 2011 study found that men who used traction devices for up to nine hours a day over the course of three months gained up to an inch in length.
In 2013, a review of penile traction studies found that traction devices were most helpful in correcting penile curves or deformities, not increasing length.
A 2016 report also found that traction devices had negligible elongation effects.
How to enlarge the penis safely
There is no problem with trying lengthening exercises. They can help you feel more comfortable with the size and appearance of your penis.
Before doing any manual lengthening:
Do these exercises only while the penis is flaccid.
Stop if the exercise causes you pain or discomfort.
As you do them, sit or stand against a wall or table.
To avoid injury, only do these exercises once or twice a day.
Talk to your doctor if you want to do these exercises longer or do them more often.
To stretch the penis manually:
Hold the head of the penis.
Pull your penis up, stretching it for about 10 seconds.
Pull your penis to the left for another 10 seconds, then to the right.
Repeat these steps once or twice a day for about 5 minutes.
Or, try this:
Hold the head of the penis.
Pull the penis up.
Press on the area around the base of the penis at the same time.
Hold this position for about 10 seconds.
Repeat these steps stretching the penis to the left and applying pressure to the base of the penis on the right side.
Repeat these steps stretching the penis to the right and applying pressure to the base of the penis on the left side.
Repeat this exercise once a day, for up to two minutes.
To jelq the penis:
Place your index finger and thumb in an O shape.
Place your fingers in an O shape at the base of the penis.
Make the O smaller until it puts light pressure on the shaft of the penis.
Slowly move your finger and thumb up the head of the penis until you reach the tip. If you feel pain, reduce the pressure.
Repeat this once a day for about 20 to 30 minutes.
Lengthening with a device
To use a penis vacuum pump:
Place your penis inside the air-filled chamber.
Use the pump mechanism to suck the air out of the chamber. This draws blood into the penis, causing an erection.
Place the included ring or clamp on your penis to keep it erect for up to 30 minutes. You can safely have sex or masturbate during this time.
Remove the ring.
To use a traction device:
Insert the penis into the base end of the device.
Secure the head of the penis into the two slots on the opposite end.
Hold the silicone tube around the body of the penis.
Grab the ends of the silicone tube at the bottom of the device and slowly pull the penis out. Stop pulling if you start to feel pain or discomfort.
Leave the penis in a stretched position for 4 to 6 hours a day.
Possible risks and complications
Being too rough with your penis can cause large tears in the tissues or damage to the ligaments that connect the penis to your body. These injuries can affect your ability to get or maintain an erection.
When using a traction device, follow your doctor’s instructions on how long to wear it. Using it for a longer time can cause injuries that affect the function of the penis.
After using a pump, don’t let the blood stay in the penis for more than 30 minutes. Having an erection for more than a few hours can permanently damage the penis.
Stretching exercises or devices can cause:
minor bruising or discoloration
red spots along the shaft of the penis
See your doctor if symptoms last more than a couple of days or are severe. Your doctor can assess your symptoms and advise if there is anything else you can do.
When will I see results?
Your results will depend on the approach you take and how consistent you are with your use.
For example, to achieve noticeable effects, traction devices must be used daily, often for several months at a time.
Anecdotal stories suggest that using a penis pump can produce much faster results, but there is no research to back this up.
It’s also unclear how long it will take before you see results from manual lengthening exercises.
Talk to your doctor if you have questions or concerns about the size of your penis. You can discuss with him your options to enlarge it and explain how to do it safely.
Learning how your penis responds to lengthening and other forms of stimulation can help you feel more comfortable in your body. You may also notice changes in appearance or performance over time.
Be sure to follow the product instructions or the guidelines your doctor gives you. If done incorrectly, lengthening can lead to injury or erectile dysfunction.
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience pain or discomfort with lengthening, or if you notice any changes in your erectile function.
